High blood pressure in cats

Has your cat ever had its blood pressure checked? Many owners have not heard of feline high blood pressure. Hypertension is a serious condition in cats and should not be overlooked.

Older cats are more likely to be affected. The German source article cites a figure of about one in six cats from the age of seven.

Regular checks for older cats

High blood pressure may occur without an obvious accompanying disease, or it may be associated with conditions such as chronic kidney disease, an overactive thyroid or Cushing’s syndrome.

It often develops gradually, and the consequences may only become apparent after damage to the brain, kidneys, heart or retina. Eye damage can cause sudden loss of sight.

Regular blood pressure checks can help detect the problem earlier. The practice recommends an annual measurement for cats from around seven years of age.

The measurement is quick, non-invasive and similar to a human blood pressure check. A vet interprets the result in context, including the cat’s stress level, other findings and repeated readings where needed. If hypertension is diagnosed, the team can investigate possible causes and discuss treatment. Medication is also available in liquid form for some cats.
