Flying with your dog: how to prepare

Flying with a dog can be exciting and stressful for both people and animals. Good preparation can make the journey more comfortable.

Find out the airline’s rules early. Not every airline accepts dogs, and the animal’s size and weight may determine whether it travels in the cabin or in the hold. A small dog may be allowed in the cabin in an approved carrier, but the carrier must meet the airline’s size limits. Confirm the exact dimensions before booking.

Larger dogs usually travel in a carrier in the hold. Airlines set requirements for these carriers: they should be ventilated, have a leak-proof base and provide access to water. Your dog must be able to stand naturally, turn around and lie down. Help your dog get used to the carrier several weeks before departure, and ask the airline to confirm that your particular carrier is accepted.

Whether your dog travels in the cabin or the hold, allow time for exercise before departure. The dog cannot leave its carrier during the flight. Do not give sedatives without veterinary advice.

Your vet can advise on the vaccinations and parasite prevention relevant to your destination. If possible, avoid layovers on longer routes. And when booking, remember to reserve a place for your dog. Have a good trip!
