Helping your pet through seasonal shedding

When spring arrives, many furry pets start shedding their winter coats.

As day length and temperature change, most furry animals adapt their coat to the coming season. Seasonal shedding usually lasts six to eight weeks.

Is my pet’s shedding still normal?

Shedding varies between animals. Breed and coat type also matter. Neutered pets may shed more than unneutered ones. Spring shedding is often more noticeable than autumn shedding because the thick winter coat is lost. Long-haired animals need particular attention: loose fur can mat, and swallowing large amounts of hair can cause problems.

How to help your pet

Regular brushing removes loose hair. Choose a brush suitable for your pet. For rabbits, a very soft brush is best because their skin is sensitive. Introduce brushing gradually and increase the time in small steps. If brushing is difficult, gentle stroking can also loosen hair.

During shedding, the coat may look uneven and dandruff may appear. Round bald patches, large areas without fur or scratched skin are not normal and may indicate a fungal infection or parasites. Ask a vet if you are unsure. Some dogs and cats may benefit from a small amount of suitable oil in their food, but discuss diet changes with your vet. Hairball products for cats and cat grass for indoor cats may also be useful where appropriate.
