Found a baby squirrel: what should you do?

A young squirrel on the ground does not always need human help. First, watch from a distance and keep pets away. Its mother may return and collect it. Intervene if the animal is injured, unusually weak or cold, or if its mother does not return after a longer period of quiet observation.

Assess the situation first

Check whether there are other young squirrels nearby and whether there are immediate dangers such as traffic, cats or crows. Note where you found the animal. A wildlife rescue centre can then assess whether it might be reunited with its mother.

If immediate help is needed

Pick up the animal carefully with a cloth and place it in a quiet, well-ventilated box. Keep it gently warm without direct contact with a hot heat source. Do not give milk, food or fluids on your own: incorrect care can be dangerous for a weakened youngster. Seek prompt advice from a wildlife rescue centre or a vet.

Find specialist help

Contact a specialist wildlife care centre, for example through the Eichhörnchen-Notruf referral service, or a wildlife rescue group in Berlin. Explain the animal’s condition, where you found it and how long you observed it. Visible injuries require veterinary assessment.
