Winter paw care for dogs

Winter can be hard on a dog’s paws. They come into direct contact with cold surfaces, grit and road salt, so regular care is especially useful at this time of year.

Prepare your dog’s paws

Many dogs have long fur between their toes. Snow, ice, grit and road salt can cling to it and cause pressure points or injuries. Trimming this fur regularly can help. Use rounded scissors, work calmly and patiently, and avoid cutting the skin. If you are unsure, ask a professional for help.

Care for sensitive paw pads

A dog may go from a warm home to freezing outdoor temperatures within minutes. Road salt and grit can also irritate and dry the skin. A suitable protective paw balm before a walk may help; ask your vet which product is appropriate for your dog. Boots can be useful for particularly sensitive paws.

After a winter walk, clean and dry the paws to remove salt and grit. Check carefully for cuts and cracks. Once the paws are clean and dry, you can apply a suitable balm again. If you notice an injury, contact the Rödiger veterinary team.
