Pet microchips: what are they and why register them?

A transponder, often called a microchip, identifies a pet by a unique number. It does not store an address or track the animal’s location. If a lost pet is found, a vet or animal shelter can read the number. To reconnect the animal with its owner, the number must be registered with up-to-date contact details.

How does a microchip work?

A vet implants the small transponder under the skin. It contains an identification number and needs no battery; the scanner supplies the energy when the chip is read. The number should then be recorded in the pet passport and registered in the appropriate database.

What are the rules in Berlin?

Dogs in Berlin must be microchipped and registered with the Berlin dog register. Under the Berlin cat protection regulation, cats with unrestricted outdoor access must be identified and registered with a recognised organisation. Voluntary registration in a pet recovery database does not replace a dog’s registration in the Berlin dog register.
